The City lists couches in its bulky item pickup
For Los Angeles households LA Sanitation serves, a couch is on the City's own list. LA Sanitation says it will gladly take furniture (couches, tables, chairs), mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, carpet rolled and tied, large wood pieces or doors, and electronic waste1 at the curb, and calls that service an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge.1
The City asks for an itemized list, such as one mattress, two chairs and a desk1 so a right-sized truck is sent. One couch is one line on that list. The bulky item pickup guide is on the request step.
Donate a sofa that is still in good shape, by asking the center
Before any pickup is scheduled, LA Sanitation encourages residents to think about donating1 a couch still in good shape to a local thrift store, a charity, or a community exchange app. The City names none of them.
A phone call carries the whole question. Describe the piece plainly on the phone, name the type and the condition of the frame, fabric and cushions, and give the measurements when a piece will not pass through a standard doorway without turning on its side. The call also covers hours and whether the center picks up or asks for a drop-off. Furniture donation walks through the question step.
Donation and the City's pickup are two routes that overlap. A piece a center turns away can still go on the City's bulky list for the households LA Sanitation serves.
Measure the doorway and the turns before anything moves
A sofa coming out of a living room has to clear every doorway, hallway and turn between the piece and the driveway. Measure the sofa's width across the back with arms included, its depth from seat front to back cushion, and its height standing up.
Measure the openings next: the front door, the tightest hallway turn and any sliding patio door that may be the way out. Note any step-up, any landing with a railing and any narrow set of stairs. The numbers from the measuring tape go on the call.
Furniture removal covers the carry out of a couch and other pieces together.
| Way out | Good for | Ask first |
|---|---|---|
| City bulky item pickup | A couch on the City's accepted list, for households LA Sanitation serves | The itemized list the City asks for, with the couch on it |
| Donation to a thrift store, a charity or a community exchange app | A couch still in good shape | What the center accepts, by phone |
| A hauling business | A couch that cannot ride the first two routes | The pieces, the room and the walk to the driveway, named on the call |
A sectional comes out as several pieces
A sectional is not one couch. The piece lives against a wall as one long shape but comes out of the house as several pieces. A wedge-shaped corner is one of them. A chaise on one end is another.
Count the pieces before the first phone call so a hauler, a donation center or a City scheduler knows what to expect. Five pieces is a different plan than two.
What makes a couch a hauling job in a Los Angeles house
A household outside LA Sanitation curbside service is one case where a couch leaves the house on a hauler's call. The walk out of the house also sets what a hauler plans around: a sofa in a back bedroom that reached its spot by coming up a stair when the house was first furnished may not come down the same way, especially if a railing has been changed or a wall has been moved.
For a mixed pile from a garage and the rooms, the services page is the index for the household jobs, and how to dispose of large items runs the routes by category.
What to tell a hauler about the way out of the house
A plain description on the phone covers the pieces a hauler cannot see from a distance. Name the sofa by its type (a couch, loveseat or sectional) and give its width and length in inches or feet.
The call also covers the room the sofa sits in, the floor the room is on, and the walk out of the house to the driveway, with any doorway, hallway turn, stairs or front gate between the sofa and the truck. Note whether a garage door or a side door is the way out.
Add anything that is not a sofa going on the same call: a mattress, a dresser, a dining set or a garage of boxes.
A few more details to describe on a sofa: whether the piece is already apart or still assembled, whether anything is hooked to the frame, like a lamp or a side table, and whether a prior move has left loose pieces of hardware in a bag inside a drawer or cushion.
The free options sit alongside the hauler route. The free options guide covers the City's routes together.
